Even in this populous region miles of gorgeous beaches, both popular and uncrowded, combine with dramatic geographical features like the wild Santa Monica Mountains, the rugged Palos Verdes Peninsula, and the beautiful Laguna Hills. You'll also find major coastal wetlands, Santa Monica Bay, several small boat harbors, and the vast commercial harbors at San Pedro and Long Beach. Although it's a desert region, several rivers and numerous creeks crisscross the map, including Los Angeles River, San Gabriel River and Santa Ana River.
